Into the Hidden Grotto: Rappel Through Stone Bridges and Secret Canyons
Your journey begins among ancient petrified sand dunes for about 1 mile, descending through desert wash and sculpted sandstone. Soon, the ground seems to vanish — a hidden canyon opening beneath your feet. “We go down there?” most ask in awe. And yes, you do.
The first rappel drops you into the cool shadows of the medieval chamber - a sandstone cathedral hidden from the desert above. The medieval chamber opens into a beautiful grotto inaccessible to hikers - only to canyoneers like you! The next rappel will be even more epic...down one of the world's largest natural sandstone bridges.
With expert instruction and a backup safety system, even first-time canyoneers can savor the thrill of each descent. Along the way, your guides share stories of the land — its geology, plant life, and the forces that shaped this incredible place. A spring-fed stream guides your final steps for about 2.4 miles through this serene and unforgettable canyon hike.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience to rappel in Morning Glory Canyon?
No experience is required. Our expert guides provide full instruction, coaching, and a backup safety system so even first-timers can enjoy the thrill of rappelling. How tall are the rappels on this tour?
You’ll descend two dramatic drops of over 100 feet each, including one beside Morning Glory Arch. They look impressive from above, but our guides will help you feel confident every step of the way.Is the Morning Glory tour family friendly?
Yes—kids as young as 10 can join, and many families say it’s the highlight of their Moab trip. Our guides are great with kids and know how to balance safety with fun. What should I bring and wear?
Wear closed-toe shoes with good traction (shoes may get wet). Sandals, if you are comfortable hiking in them, can be worn but only if they have a strap across the heel (no flip-flops). Wear comfortable clothes for hiking, and bring sunscreen and water. We provide a small backpack, but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer. All technical gear, including harness, helmet, ropes, is provided. The hike out from Morning Glory Arch can have some poison ivy near water areas. This can be avoided if you’re watching for it, but for those who are sensitive, they may prefer to wear pants.
How strenuous is the hike?
Expect 1 mile of hiking from the van to the first descent among the slickrock domes and fins of Sand Flats. Expect about a 2.5-mile hike through Grandstaff Canyon after the rappels. It’s mostly moderate terrain with some stream crossings, and guides keep a pace that works for the whole group.
Will I get wet on this tour?
Morning Glory is primarily a dry canyon, however, the spring and stream runs year round. Depending on the season or if it has recently rained, you may encounter some shallow water in the narrow slot canyon portion of the Medieval Chamber and shallow stream crossings in Grandstaff Canyon, but you won’t need to swim.
How does this tour compare to Bow & Arrow Canyon?
Morning Glory has 2 rappels, provides the opportunity to rappel next to a massive natural arch, and has a 2.5 mile hike out next to a stream which is refreshing during the hot months. Bow & Arrow Canyon includes 4 rappels, petroglyphs, and a view of a hidden arch. It is typically dry and has a little more elevation gain in the beginning, however, a mile shorter.
