The History of Rock Climbing - and Moab’s Place in It
Rock climbing as a modern sport traces its roots to 19th-century Europe, where climbers in the Alps began scaling peaks and cliffs not just for exploration, but for recreation. By the early 20th century, climbing was established in the Dolomites of Italy, the sandstone towers of Saxony in Germany, and the crags of Britain’s Lake District. In the United States, climbing grew in places like the Shawangunks in New York and the granite walls of Yosemite Valley, California, which became the world’s most influential climbing area during the mid-1900s.
Moab entered the climbing scene later, but quickly earned a reputation for something unique: its red sandstone desert towers and roadside crags. Beginning in the 1960s, pioneering climbers explored formations like Castleton Tower and the Fisher Towers, establishing routes that became legendary in the climbing world. Unlike Yosemite’s sheer granite, Moab’s soft desert sandstone demanded new techniques—particularly crack climbing, where hands and feet are wedged into fissures.
Today, Moab is considered one of the premier climbing destinations in North America. From famous desert towers that attract elite climbers, to accessible crags like Wall Street and Ice Cream Parlor that welcome beginners, Moab offers something for every level. Its combination of history, scenery, and variety makes it an essential chapter in the story of rock climbing—where newcomers can experience the same walls that inspired generations of adventurers.

Questions about Rock Climbing in Moab
Do I need any rock climbing experience?
Nope! Our Moab Rock Climbing tours are designed for beginners and first-timers. Your guide will teach you everything you need to know—from tying knots to belaying and making your first moves on real rock.
Is this good for kids and families?
Yes! Many families bring kids as young as 5 and teens, and they love the challenge. Guides choose routes that are appropriate for all levels, so everyone has a chance to succeed and feel comfortable. Sometimes the youngest kids are the best climbers!
How does the climbing work—will I always be on a rope?
Yes\! All of our routes are set up as top-rope climbs, which means you’re always securely attached to a rope anchored above the climb. Your guide manages the rope with a belay system that keeps the line snug, so any time you pause or slip, the rope is there to hold you. This setup allows beginners to focus on the fun of climbing without worrying about “falling.”
Where will we climb?
Most trips take place at classic Moab climbing areas like Wall Street (right along the Colorado River, just minutes from town) or Ice Cream Parlor (in scenic Kane Springs Canyon). Both areas are known for their fun, beginner-friendly routes. During the summer months, we will often climb in the Ice Cream Parlor area for morning tours and Wallstreet for afternoon tours. During the spring or fall, we may climb either area in the morning or afternoon.
How long does the tour last?
Plan on about 5 hours total. That includes the short 15 to 20 minute drive from town, getting fitted with gear, learning the basics, and plenty of time to climb multiple routes.
What equipment is provided?
We provide all the technical climbing gear you’ll need—harness, helmet, ropes, and belay devices. Just bring comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes, water, and your sense of adventure!
What if I’m afraid of heights?
That’s more common than you might think. Many of our guests show up nervous but leave smiling after their first climb. Our guides are experts at coaching you through each step at your own pace. Climbing is more about looking up and less about looking down, so sometimes the fear of heights can be less of an issue than you might think.
What should I wear?
Dress for the weather of the day. Athletic clothing works best—something you can move in easily. We’ll have climbing shoes for you to wear. Sunscreen, a hat, and layers are recommended depending on the season.
When is the best time of year to go rock climbing in Moab?
Our climbing season runs from April through November. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures, but summer mornings and late afternoons are also popular.
Can we book a private climbing trip?
Yes, private trips are available. They’re a great option for families, couples, or groups who want a customized climbing experience with one-on-one attention.
