Canyonlands Weather and Best Times to Visit

Seasons and Temperatures in Canyonlands National Park

The best time to visit Canyonlands National Park for river rafting is when temperatures peak for the summer - beginning in late spring through mid-September. The cool river, with potential for monsoon storms, does plenty to counter the hot summer days, often exceeding 100°F.  Canyonlands temperatures during the summer months are also tempered by the higher elevations of the Island in the Sky District - where short hikes minimize exposure. Plan your short hikes to Mesa Arch and the Overlooks in morning or evening to avoid mid-day heat.

If you are planning more extensive hiking and backpacking in Canyonlands, like in the Needles or Maze districts, it would be wise to plan for the cooler temps of spring or fall. Be sure to bring plenty or water no matter when you come. Spring and fall offer moderate conditions, with daytime averages in the 60-80°F range and cooler nights.

Utah doesn’t do weather halfway! Winters are cold, with temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Be prepared for significant daily temperature swings regardless of the season.
