SxS vs. Hummer Tours in Moab: Which Off-Road Adventure Is Right for You?

Moab is an off-road paradise, a place where slickrock ledges, red sandstone fins, and Mars-like desert terrain create some of the most exciting four-wheel adventures on Earth. Travelers come from all over the world to experience it. But when it comes to choosing how to explore, many wonder: should you rent a Side-by-Side (SxS) like a RZR, or join a professionally guided Hummer tour?
What Is a Side-by-Side (SxS) Tour?
Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicles, often called RZRs or UTVs, are high-powered, open-air machines built for speed, agility, and independent exploration. They seat two to four people and are typically rented for self-guided or loosely guided adventures.
What to Expect on a SxS Tour
- You Drive: You’re in full control of the vehicle, navigating slickrock climbs, sandy washes, and rugged terrain.
- Adrenaline-Packed: Expect bumps, dust, and fast-paced fun. It’s hands-on and physically engaging.
- DIY Adventure: Perfect for drivers who love independence and want the freedom to explore at their own pace.
Who are SxS Tours Best For?
- Experienced off-road drivers
- Thrill seekers who don’t mind a challenge or some risk
- Adults or older teens looking for a do-it-yourself adventure
What You Need to Rent and Drive a SXS
- Drivers age 18+ must complete the Utah Off-Highway Vehicle Education Course (free and required by law).
- Drivers ages 16–17 with a valid license must complete the Utah Youth Certification Course, which takes about 3–4 hours and costs $35.
- Damage deposit or insurance is typically required.

What Is a Hummer Tour?
A Hummer tour is a guided, professionally operated off-road experience that lets you explore Moab’s most legendary terrain, places most visitors could never safely reach on their own. At Moab Adventure Center, our tours are led by certified, highly trained guides driving custom Hummer H1 vehicles built for steep slickrock, sand dunes, and rugged ledges.
Wow! I was not expecting that!!!! Mike took us on the most thrilling ride. I couldn’t believe our first ascent! He really knows the trails and expertly navigates up and down and across the most challenging passageways. He was full of great local and geological information. I highly recommend Moab Adventure Center.

Had a great time on the Humvee tour of Hell's Revenge! Not going to lie, as soon as we entered the trail, I asked myself what I had signed up for...but our guide, Craig, was incredible and knowledgeable and had been crawling these trails for most of his life. It's definitely an adventure I'm glad I booked! When in Moab, this is a must!
