Utah Rafting » Green River Trip
Desolation Canyon, deeper than Grand Canyon, is hardly desolate with its big sandy beaches, sparkling side streams, shady stands of huge Cottonwoods, and abundant wildlife. A century ago, this picture-perfect playground was a hiding place for Butch Cassidy and his gang of bank robbers. Now, with family-friendly vacation rates, we've made it easy for adventurous families to escape here and play. Raft some 60 fun-filled rapids in a rowboat with our guide doing all the work, or take a turn challenging the waves in an inflatable kayak or paddleboat. Hike to old homesteads and hideouts. Play beach volleyball, or do nothing at all while Western's designated "Fun Director" entertains the kids.DAY ONE A scenic flight over the river corridor lands on a spectacular desert plateau. Choose a beautiful hike or take a bus ride to the river's edge. Launch onto a calm stretch of the Green, perfect for swimming and relaxing. Before your first delicious camp dinner, explore, play a game, or just relax and soak in the soothing beauty of Desolation Canyon.
DAY TWO After a restful night under the stars, awaken to a hearty breakfast. Hike a short distance to 1000-year-old Indian petroglyphs. Savor a delicious riverside buffet lunch. Then, climb aboard your row boat and let your guide take the oars through several exciting rapids, or you and a partner may choose to paddle your own inflatable kayak.
DAY THREE Hike to a historic homestead rich in folklore and outlaw history. Run Wire Fence and Three Fords rapids, among the biggest whitewater on the Green. Float out of Desolation Canyon, and enter scenic Gray Canyon, traversing 40 million years of geologic history in the blink of an eye.
DAYS FOUR AND FIVE Several rapids interspersed with calm stretches for swimming and an occasional water fight provide fun and excitement all morning. Today's lunch spot is a huge sandy beach, where you'll celebrate your successful journey. Later in the season, the trip extends to a fifth day, as the water slows its pace.
